What to Pack for an African Safari

Pack light, in soft luggage, in neutral colours — khaki, olive and beige that won't spook wildlife or show dust. Mornings are cold and middays hot, so layers matter more than bulk.

Bring binoculars, a camera with a zoom lens, high-factor sun cream, insect repellent and any personal medication. For gorilla and chimp treks, add sturdy boots, gardening gloves and a light rain jacket.

Most camps offer same-day laundry, so a week's clothing is plenty even for a two-week trip. Leave space for the curios you'll inevitably bring home.
